IHK could have oil reserves: experts

NEW DELHI: Geological and oil experts are upbeat over oil and natural gas reserves in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
Recently visiting Italian oil major Eni Milan’s geology head Jonathan Craig believed that Kashmir could turn into a well of “white gold as the rocks in the state are similar in character to those of the hydrocarbon-yielding infra-Cambrian sequence in oil-rich Oman, North Africa and natural gas-rich regions of Pakistan.
Following up on Craig’s research, Jammu University is holding a two-day international workshop from February 21 to seek out the hydrocarbon potential of the state. Head of Geology Department at the University, Professor GM Bhat, said that Craig had confirmed the potential for extraction of oil and natural gas in the region. He said the workshop will highlight the potential and also assess the quantum of gas and oil reserves.
Infra-Cambrian rocks were until recently considered devoid of petroleum till huge oil and gas reserves were discovered from them in Siberia, Africa and other continents.
